Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A launch Scion vehicles aimed at a new generation of consumers who actively seek-out the latest trends in style and innovation. Scion will be structured as a dealer-within-a-dealer. All Toyota dealers will be offered the opportunity to sell the Scion line and will be offered in a clearly dedicated environment with its own certified sales staff. The environment will be low-key and buyer-friendly. Scion launched its first vehicles in June 2003

New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), a 50-50 joint venture between General Motors (GM) and Toyota. NUMMI makes Tacoma pickup trucks and Corolla sedans for Toyota. The Tacoma is made only at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California. The company also makes GM's Pontiac division's Vibe sport wagon. NUMMI can produce 220,000 cars and 150,000 pickups a year. Together GM and Toyota are researching alternative-fuel vehicles to meet strict emissions requirements.
